I think that mermaids could be real to some degree. The argument that we havnt caught one so they aren't real is an uneducated deduction imo.

Think about it. A race of sentient beings that have lived underwater for ages uncounted. We can assume that they are adapted quite well to living and functioning underwater yes? And thus they would most likely have VERY good hearing, and wave sense underwater correct? So then why do we think we could ever get within a thousand yards of one without it knowing and fleeing? "But what about sonar??? Wouldnt we see them?!?!?!" Maybe we do.... Imagine what one would look like on an imaging device. Sort of like a shark right? Long-ish sleek body with a strong back tail fin thingy... Sounds a lot like a shark to me, and I dont think any sort of sonar would be able to differentiate.

Imagine a colony of mermaids / sea people. They live in underwater caves / grottos. Maybe even crevaces. They build natural looking structures, or better yet.... they have no need to build shelters.. I mean it doesnt rain underwater does it ;) So then they are like desert dwellers. Nomads if you will. When they hear something unusual they send a scout to check it out. Or maybe they just flee?? They could sense and hear us well before we could them, after all they are made for underwater life are they not? And the ocean is VERY VERY big. We are still discovering new species today. And they arent even intelligent to our standards.

So then. would it be possible for an intelligent underwater race to exist beyond our knowledge? Of course. Maybe in the past they didnt fear men as much, and were not as cautious thus them being occasionally seen. But now with all of our technology etc they fear us and hide from us. Can you blame them? Basically I just wanted to logically examine the possibility that they COULD exist. Whether they do is left up to the individual.
